Diverse classifications : biocides, medical devices, drugs and cosmetics Depending on their composition and intended use, our products are classified as medical devices, biocides, drugs, or cosmetics. This classification determines which legal regulations apply – from quality management standards and product and manufacturing specifications to approval, labeling, proof of efficacy, and monitoring. For example, cleaners typically fall under quality management according to ISO 9001, medical devices under the EU Medical Device Regulation (MDR) in conjunction with a QMS according to EN ISO 13485, and biocidal products under the Biocidal Products Regulation. Medicinal products are subject to pharmaceutical law and the requirements of GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) for medicinal products, while cosmetic products are subject to the EU Cosmetics Regulation and cosmetic GMP. This results in different requirements for manufacturing, market access, and market surveillance, depending on the product category. Dr. Schumacher 47 Contact times for surface disinfection Compliance with contact times is essential to ensure successful hygiene with surface disinfection. Accord- ing to the Robert Koch Institute, routinely disinfected surfaces can be used again once they are visibly dry. There are, however, exceptions for which the contact time for surface disinfection must be observed. What is the one-hour value? With the one-hour value, concentrates are dosed in such a way that the solution becomes effective after a contact time of one hour. This value is used in high risk areas in particular. It is important to note that once the disinfected surface is visibly dry, it can be used again irrespective of the one-hour contact time. Most microorganisms are inactivated at the start of the contact time. In which situations must the given contact time be observed before the surface can be reused? • With targeted disinfection when there is a risk of germ transmission from a surface to a patient • With final disinfection • When reprocessing medical devices • When disinfecting baths Should surfaces have to be reused quickly on a regular basis, the use of rapidly effective disinfectants is recommended. Because visual inspec- tion of all surfaces isn't possible, proper reprocessing procedures are critical for patient safety. Usually, the process is regulated by local guidelines and subject to validation requirements. Generally, manual reprocessing of endoscopes has an increased potential for errors and an automated reprocessing is preferred whenever possible. Even in the case of particularly stubborn organic soiling (such as on bone punches), impeccable results can be achieved with THERMOSHIELD XTREME through man- ual pre-cleaning in an ultrasonic bath combined with automated reprocessing. When installing wall dispensers, pay attention to the following points: Visibility The dispensers must be placed in the staff’s field of vision. Tangibility Dispensers should be easy to find and use. Correct application is particularly crucial at the “point of care” (POC). At POC three elements of healthcare come together: patients, staff and treatment. Dispensers must therefore always be installed close to the patient in order to ensure hygiene standards and protect the patients and staff.
